Select Name - Unity

Selecting your name

A player's name is the identity of their avatar on the map for the current game and is decided during the name selection phase before the game starts. Upon entering your name, the following message will appear to everyone to reflect this: "(Name) has joined the Town.". If you want to choose another name, you may change it, however the chat will generate the same message rather than indicating a name change. The name may not exceed 16 characters at maximum. Spaces at the end of your name, numbers, symbols such as "&", names with two consecutive capital letters, the same or similar name as another player, and any kind of profanity aren't allowed to be used. If you see anyone bypassing the profanity filter, be sure to report them as soon as possible.

Before entering a game, you can make your name be pre-typed for you by filling in the blank found in the Customization Options.

Strategy[]

  • Make sure your name does not violate the rules (e.g. an anti-semitic or racist name). This may result in you being banned. Additionally, offensive names can lead to offended evil roles killing you.
    • You might think of using a 'controversial' name if you are equipped with Veteran scrolls. Make sure that the name does not violate the rules while also acknowledging you may get another role.
  • Having a confusing name can mess with the Town if you're any role that's not Town, which is usually good. However, having a confusing name can backfire if you're in the Town. Examples of confusing names include: a common in-game term (e.g. "Roleblocked"), having a role as your name, having a name that's filtered by the chat filter, having a name too similar to someone else, or just having a name that is plain gibberish and annoying to type out (such as "jgejwelfhwkwotrj").
  • You can equip a scroll for any evil role and name yourself similar to someone else so that if you get called out, it'll be harder for the accuser. For example, if you're the Godfather with the name "IIIIII" and there's another player with the name "IIIII", players will be confused about who the accuser is calling out, which could lower suspicion or have the incorrect player lynched.
    • However, it is more common for Town Investigatives to simply refer to you as your position (number) or put your position in their Last Wills.
    • Alternatively, you may be on the receiving end if the other player is suspicious and you aren't, as they may accidentally lynch you over the actual evil.
  • Having names that do not stand out is usually good to survive the first Night. An example of a name that doesn't stand out is simply "John" or "happy". Most players's eyes won't fall on this during the Night time and might instead target a name that stands out.
  • If there is a theme, check how many players are following it. If the majority are following it, join in to blend in. If only a handful of players are following it, go for your regular name. In games with themes, the majority will often times prosecute the minority (e.g. if there are more themed names than non-themed, the themed players will lynch the non-themed players), although this can sometimes be reportable behavior.
  • Choosing a single name and sticking to it, which is especially common in Ranked games, can lead to being 'hunted' across games if a user doesn't like you. If you notice you're being targeted whether you're suspicious or not, try temporarily picking a new name if you don't want to wait out the queue. If a player admits to 'hunting' you, report them.

Background[]

The default names come from the infamous witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. During this time, countless men and women were accused of being witches, and were lynched over the mass hysteria. Many of these names also come from the 1953 play The Crucible.

More info can be found at Salem witch trials.

Trivia[]

  • Alice Parker was one of the names from the Salem witch trials and used to be a default name. After 2017, the name was removed from the list.
  • If you pick a name, send something to the chat, then change your name to something else, the message associated with the previous name will still appear when you filter the chat log of the new name in-game. For example, if you name yourself "John", type 'hi', then change your name to "Bob", anyone filtering Bob's messages in-game by using the chat filter will see "John: hi" associated with the player Bob, effectively revealing that you changed your name from John to Bob.
