As darkness falls, a young boy walks home hand-in-hand with his mother. The Medium gently tucks her son in to bed. The boy drifts off to sleep. The only noises heard that night were a knock at the door and a faint scream.

Awakening the next day, the innocent child stares in anguish at the body of the woman who raised and loved him. As tears fall from his face, he calls out, hoping to wake up from this nightmare. Receiving no relief to this pain, the weeping boy staggers into the town square to share the horrific news. Returning home that night, the broken boy collapses onto his bed. Falling asleep, the boy looks up at the stars and wishes and prays to be with his mother again.

As the sun rises on Salem the next day, a young boy walks into town hand-in-hand with his mother.

Mechanics

  • The Retributionist is a unique role [citation needed]; there can never be more than one in a match, unless remembered by an Amnesiac.

Ressurecting a target

  • The Retributionist has the ability to reanimate a dead player and use their ability on another living player. The corpse then rots, allowing only one use of a corpse.
    • You will visit your first target in the graveyard. A Tracker can see you visiting the target you choose to reanimate. This is able to confirm you as a Retributionist if there is no Necromancer.
  • The corpse performs the second visit, not you. The corpse itself is then subjective to anything a normal player would be. A Lookout can see the dead player visiting their target, and a Bodyguard or Trap from a Trapper will respond against your reanimated player. Likewise, a Werewolf or Pestilence rampage at your second target's location will not harm you.
  • You cannot reanimate a player who is also being reanimated by the Necromancer, you will instead receive a message stating the corpse is missing from the graveyard.
  • You have Roleblock Immunity, meaning that you will be able to control a corpse even if a Pirate, Escort, or Consort role-blocks you.
  • Should you reanimate an investigative role, you will see their results.

Strategy

Retributionist somewhat serves as a foil to the Necromancer, as you work for the town using your abilities. You are limited with your uses, as you can only control Town Roles. This essentially makes you a jack of all trades.

  • Using a corpse can be useful for any investigative townies, as you can control a dead Town Investigative role to their last target before they died so you can receive results.
    • Note that you do not need to do this if a Medium is in the game and the townie did not leave so they can talk to them, nor if the target they investigated is dead.
  • If the Town is ever suspicious of a player, use a dead Sheriff or Investigator and tell the town what you saw, note that some roles have Detection Immunity and will be seen as innocent to a Sheriff, not to mention many players claim within Investigator results
  • Using a dead Lookout can be done to watch an important townie like the Mayor or Jailor can be good for confirming Town roles
  • You can also try and use a dead Lookout on a player who you think will be attacked if there are no Town Protective roles in the graveyard to catch any potential killers
  • Using a dead Tracker is similar to a Lookout, but you should also track a suspicious player who claims a non-visiting role (or a role that creates obvious results upon visiting such as Vigilante), or anyone else who claims your role since it is a Unique role, you might be able to catch a Janitor or Necromancer
  • Using a Spy can be used to confirm a player as an Escort or Transporter, or to catch evils claiming to be roleblocked, or are seen with incriminating bug information such as having defense, or being doused (a message that only appears if your target is an Arsonist who has been doused)
  • You should generally use Town Investigative roles as soon as they are available since your chances or catching an evil are decently high
  • If a Bodyguard dies whilst protecting a revealed Mayor, protect them again. The chances of a second Bodygaurd is unlikely and the Mayor might be attacked again so this can slip up members of the Mafia or Coven by doing this
  • Using a Bodyguard is usually preferable to a Doctor since they cant take down an attacker, but the Doctor can save a player from multiple attacks, if you think a player will be attacked by multiple parties you should use a Doctor over a Bodyguard
  • A Crusader can be used as a better Bodyguard since they protect from all attacks and will also attack a visitor, the downside being that the visitor might be an innocent Townie so try to target confirmed townies or anyone who a Spy says that the Mafia or Coven is visiting frequently
  • Always try and save Town Protective corpses until you are confident a player will be attacked. You only have one use on every corpse and shouldn't waste it
  • A Vigilante Is your only reliable killing role, this can be used on anyone who is a known evil, anyone who claims to be your role
    • In fact, having two Retributionist claims shoot eachother with a dead Vigilante is a good strategy since there is no risk of a second
      • However, this should usually not be done in the Coven DLC since a Necromancer could be your counter-claim and they will be able to shoot you before you can use your corpse or might use a Crusader, Ambusher, or Bodygaurd on theselves, granted, once you are revealed as a Retributionist, your counter-claim will likely be called out unless a Disguiser is possible, but it will still hurt the Town alot in the long run
    • You will also see if your target has defense, meaning that you will know if your target is an evil role since no Town role has Defense unless healed, so ask if a Doctor protected them, which they ussually won't do if a player is suspicious enough to be shot
  • A Vampire Hunter can be used if you believe that Vampires are still at large. If a player is accused, you can stake them to check, preferably on a night Vampires can't convert them
  • Town Killing roles should only ever be used if you are relatively certain that a player is evil, while they can help tremendously if used right, if you waste your shot, you can detriment the Town more then you help
  • If a player is accused, or if there is one in the graveyard, use an Escort to roleblock them, if there is no Mafia kill the next night, you most likely used hit a solo Mafia killing role
  • Town Support roles can be used at any time that you feel is ideal, you can still harm town with this ability however, so you shouldn't be wasteful and use it on a random Townie

Trivia

  • Prior to Version 3.2.4, the Retributionist was able to revive dead town members, bringing them back to life permanently. This was most likely changed since some players felt the role was too powerful and wasn't fun to play
  • Also prior to Version 3.2.4, the Retributionist was previously unable to be a traitor in Town Traitor gamemodes.
